Complaints concerning content or advertising may be lodged by another regulator, an individual or the Authority itself (acting on its own initiative). After verifying that a complaint has satisfied formal requirements, the Board asks the Managing Director to open an investigation. Following the investigative procedure, if ALIA concludes that the service has “manifestly, seriously and gravely” (Art. 35sexies of the Amended Law on Electronic Media) infringed the applicable provisions in terms of content or advertising, it may take disciplinary action. There are three levels of penalty: a reprimand, a reprimand with requirement to broadcast a statement on air, or a fine ranging from €250 to €25,000. Appeals against decisions made by ALIA may be brought before the administrative courts.

The Authority also monitors films screened in cinemas, their classification and the mandatory publication of this classification. If operators take self-regulatory action and classify films according to the age categories provided, ALIA intervenes on an ad hoc basis to verify compliance with and mandatory publication of the classification. ALIA may reclassify a film in a higher category by a reasoned decision.

Finally, the Authority is in charge of allocating frequencies for local radio stations and regional radio stations (transmission networks).
